Is our largest
British spider, active from April to October.
It is usually found around the edge of acid pools,
and in boggy areas. Sits with front legs touching
surface of water waiting for vibrations caused
by insects trapped in surface film.
The best place to see them at Slop Bog, is along
the boardwalk, and along Kingfisher Creek.
Wasp Spider
The Wasp Spider is a most colourful insect although
not native to the UK. Since being introduced
from Europe it has spread quite quickly over
the hearths of Dorset. It spins a large orb
web which has a broad white band through it.
Most often seen among heather plants, on Western
and Eastern.
Bush Cricket
This large cricket is common and may be seen
in many different habitats.
It favours hedgerows, and rough grassy places.
At Slop Bog, look for it in any rough overgrown
areas..
Woodlice Spider
This spider is only active at night, during
the day it hides under stones, and logs. Found
all year round.
Woodlouse spiders have large fangs, which
are able to penetrate the tough shells of
woodlice.
At Slop Bog, look for them under rotting logs.
